Last May, I put on a set of glasses that changed my life. Sounds crazy? I can see why! But these glasses were perfectly tailored to my bio-indvidiuality— meaning my exact prescription, depth perception, nervous system triggers and additional factors were all considered when my doctor, a functional ophthalmologist who specializes in neurology, built a special set of prism glasses that ended up affecting every part of my day- including how I walked, worked and was able to tolerate stressors like blue light, screen time, driving, traveling and more.
When people think about vision problems, they often think about blurry vision or needing glasses. But in chronic illness that includes neurological symptoms, the issue is not how clearly they see—it is how well the eyes work together. I wish more people knew about BVD, this was one diagnosis I was happy to receive once I understood what it meant- my brain was simply trying to communicate how stressed it was!
Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) occurs when the eyes are slightly misaligned and the brain must constantly work to force them into coordination. Why does this matter? Even small misalignments can create significant strain on the nervous system. Because the brain is working overtime to process visual information, symptoms can extend far beyond the eyes themselves. Individuals with BVD may experience headaches, dizziness, light sensitivity, neck and shoulder tension, fatigue, brain fog, anxiety-like symptoms, difficulty concentrating, motion sensitivity, or a feeling of being off balance.
In complex or chronic illness cases, these symptoms can easily overlap with other conditions, making BVD an often overlooked contributor. Some people spend years investigating hormones, gut health, inflammation, or other factors without knowing how to look at their case from a functional neurology lens that often includes BVD. And if you’ve followed me for any amount of time- you know that when the nervous system is turned up in the intensity of trying to manage symptoms, the immune system’s ability to function is greatly diminished and likely not eliminating pathogens or toxins at all.
Have you examined your case from a functional neurology perspective? It wasn’t just the turning point to my healing story but it has been for many others as well.
Have questions? Let’s talk about it! Book a consult today and I’ll get you connected with a functional neurologist who can actually help.
